Why You Need A Collector's Car Insurance Policy For Your Classic Car
What qualifies a vehicle as collectible? As the amount of classic & antique car hobbyists grows, this question becomes more clouded, as there are really no set qualifications. The collectible car market continues to expand rapidly, beyond classic Ford Model As, 57 Chevys and Packards, and into Hot Rods, muscle cars, vintage pickups, vintage racers, sports cars and 70's cars. While the old standard used to be 25+ years for a classic car, they are now qualified on a per vehicle basis. Even new exotics and sports cars can be insurable as collector cars. How are most collector cars insured? Only about 50% of the collector cars on the road now are insured by specialty programs. Collector car insurance has been available since the 1960’s, but most owners of collectibles, specialty cars and street rods still insure them through a standard insurance company. This, I can only assume, is due to ignorance, because the cost is higher and the policies, more restrictive. All the traditional coverage that regular car insurance provides -- liability, physical damage, underinsured/uninsured motorist, and personal injury protection – can be obtained through a collector vehicle insurer, usually at a fraction of the cost. Rates are lower because collector vehicles are treated better and, therefore, experience fewer overall claims. Isn't it easier to stay with my standard insurer? - - Do you mind paying up to a 500% higher annual premium - - Do you mind paying multiple liability charges on multiple cars - - Do you know if you’ll get the full value of your classic car back in the unfortunate event that it is totaled Standard companies rarely offer the added benefits associated with collector car programs. Are there different types of insurance specialty programs for collector vehicles, and what is the difference between them? There are several specialty programs available with various levels of service, rates, types of coverage and claims handling. The 3 types of automobile insurance offered are Actual Cash Value (ACV), Stated Value, and Agreed Value. ACV coverage insures most everyday cars and pays out a depreciated book value. In other words, the older a car is on an ACV policy, the less book value it has. Some insurance companies offer Stated Value policies for collectibles, and these are much better than ACV, as they allow you to state a value for your vehicle GREATER than its depreciated book value. That said, Stated Value can still depreciate vehicles, as most policies only require the insurance company to pay “UP TO” the stated amount. The only insurance policy that guarantees that you will get full value in the event your car is “totaled” is an Agreed Value insurance policy. With an AV policy, there is no depreciation of a car's value. Is there specialty insurance for street rods and custom cars? Yes, but there are differences in how they are insured, and the difficulty lies in determining their value. There is no set “book value” or guide to determine how much they are worth. You and your car insurance company must look at many factors: the mechanical and aesthetic modifications made to the car, its horsepower, suspension system, paint scheme, and more. You must first determine a base value of the car, then add the quality of the parts and workmanship. There is usually a premium put on cars that were built by famous car builders. How do I compute my collector car’s annual premium? Insurance is regulated on a State by State basis, with physical damage coverage, comprehensive and collision, making up the majority of any given premium. This is calculated by the value of the car and it's age. Liability coverages are much more complicated to explain, but fortunately for consumers they are very inexpensive, usually somewhere between $30-$50. Many car insurance policies have a single liability charge, no matter how many collectibles owned. Remember, they can only drive one car at a time. *smile* The information needed for the application is much the same as for a standard auto policy: name and address of the insured (and, if it’s in a storage facility, the address of the car too); number of drivers in the household; year, make, model and VIN; and whether the driver has been involved in any accidents. The insurer also needs to know the value of the car and the number of miles on it, and have pictures of the vehicle. How do I value my classic car? Insuring the value of cars can be tricky. Be sure your classic car insurance company choice can adequately insure your car for an appropriate value. There are many factors to consider when valuing a vehicle. If the car is a stock original vehicle, there are many resource guides and pricing books that can provide value guidelines based upon the car’s condition. These are somewhat less useful for newly restored vehicles and street rods; because every newly restored car and modified car is different. So, the amount of money spent on it, the type of parts used, etc become important in the valuation. Keep detailed lists of the work performed on your car and receipts for all parts and labor, and this will help insure it properly. Appraisals can be helpful, but are not always necessary. Do collector car programs impose milage & usage restrictions? Many, but not all, specialty insurance programs strictly limit owners to driving their collector vehicles to 2,500 miles per year. Most do not allow vehicles to be used for the commercial transportation of goods or passengers, for racing, or for daily transportation. Where can I drive a collector car: parades, shows, Sunday Cruise? Enthusiasts like to share their collector cars with the public but they also just enjoy driving them around. While some programs require that collector cars are only to be driven in activities of public interest, many also allow for and encourage the private enjoyment of collector cars. So, go ahead and take that Sunday drive. Nevertheless, collectors should consider these types of restrictions and find a policy with flexible usage guidelines that best suits their overall needs.
